    I thought it a very British ending. Which was appropriate given the accents and the WWII atmosphere it invoked.

    I'm not sure that "Freedom fighters sacrificing their lives so that their movement has a chance to win a war" is necessarily depressing. Sure, it's not cheerful, but I didn't find it miserable…
