One Year On

A year ago yesterday we completed on the purchase of the new house. A year ago tomorrow we moved in. On the day in between, I came down for the day to sort a few things out and receive some deliveries. And I took some photos. Today, at the same time of day with the same lenses on the same camera and in similar weather, I took some more photos from the same angles (as far as I could reproduce them).

The view from the front garden. The Sambuca Nigra on the left is not looking very happy since being pruned last month, but it died back similarly last year, just a bit later. Everything is earlier this year since it was a mild wet spring instead of a cold snowy one.

The front of the study and living room. The wisteria should have been pruned last year at about the time we moved in, and it wasn't. It has now been pruned, so we hope it will actually flower next spring. Note also how much greener the grass is this year -- last summer was very hot and dry around late July and early August, and in fact the day the 2013 photos were taken was (I think) the hottest day of the year. Lucky we weren't moving until the next day.

The front of the house from a different angle, with added Jodie in 2014.

The whole front of the house, still with untamed wisteria in 2013. The flowering cherry under which I stood to take these two photos seems to have grown rather between 2013 and 2014.

And again -- this is the last one of the front. Note dog toys on the lawn in 2014. The previous owners removed all the dog toys they could find when they moved out, which means that they only left 20 or 30 behind, hidden in the undergrowth. The nearer ball is one of those. Note also how much lighter the extreme left-hand side is in 2014, where we had the enormous leylandii removed.

Moving to the back, here's the pond and back patio, with added laundry in 2014. The grass at the back looks rather yellower in 2014, because I mowed it yesterday.

And a wider view of the back patio. The shrubs to the right of the 2013 picture did not fare well. The low bushy one got very lightly pruned and died completely over the winter. And most of the buddleia blew down in the winter storms. On the other hand it looks as though the grape vine gorwing up the back wall is doing better this year than last.

Here's the bee garden off the back garden. It's pretty overgrown, but then it was in 2013 as well.

Finally, the equestrian facilities. Here's the stable yard. Half of the grass was bare in 2013 because we'd just had it dug up to lay concrete, level it off, lay water pipes to the field and add a soakaway. Disappointingly, you can't really tell that we've repainted the stables recently. The electric tape in the foreground in 2014 is to keep the horses out of the duck-feed in the duck house to the left (out of shot).

And the riding arena. As you can see, we've done a bit of re-staining the wood, and have a lot more to do.
